Step-by-Step Guide to the Naturalisation Process After ILR

This guide provides step by step guide to the Naturalisation application after ILR.

Step 1: Check Eligibility and Gather Documentation

The first step is to ensure you meet all requirements. It is also essential to gather the following documents:

  • Passport and Travel Documents: Required to prove residency and meet absence limits.
  • ILR Status Proof: Typically, this is a BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) or digital immigration status.
  • Life in the UK Test Certificate and English Language Proficiency Certificate (if applicable).
  • Evidence of Employment and Financial Stability: Documents demonstrating good character, including P60s or employment letters, can strengthen your application.

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

Applications for naturalisation are submitted online through the UK Home Office website. The form requires details about your residence, employment history, travel outside the UK, and personal details, including background checks. Accurate information is crucial, as discrepancies may result in delays or rejections.

Step 3: Book and Attend Your Biometrics Appointment

After submitting your application, you will be prompted to book a biometric appointment. At the appointment, you will provide fingerprints, a photograph, and possibly a signature. This data will be used for your British citizenship documentation.

Step 4: Await Decision from the Home Office

Processing times for naturalisation applications vary, but typically take around 6 months. During this time, the Home Office may contact you for additional information or verification.

Step 5: Attend Your Citizenship Ceremony

If your application is approved, you will receive an invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony. This ceremony formalises your status as a British citizen. You will take an Oath of Allegiance or an Affirmation of Allegiance to the UK, followed by receiving a Certificate of British Citizenship.

Step 6: Apply for your British Passport

Once you receive your Naturalisation certificate, you can apply for your first British Passport.
