A Substantive Asylum Interview is an in-depth interview where an asylum seeker is asked detailed questions about:

  • Whether they have sought protection elsewhere
  • Any evidence or documents they may have

  • The interview usually takes place at a Home Office asylum interview centre.
  • The applicant will receive a letter notifying them of the date, time, and location of the interview.
  • It is essential to attend unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Who Can Attend The Substantive Asylum Interview?

  • The Home Office caseworker (interviewer)
  • An interpreter, if requested
  • The applicant’s legal representative, if they choose to attend
